A Horror Movie Sent Fans Increasingly Unhinged Texts for Weeks. Why Did It Work?

Every few months, some brand pulls off a marketing stunt that makes the rest of us in the industry stop and go “okay, that’s clever.” This month we’re talking about Focus Features, and the stunt is a text message campaign for their surprise horror hit “Obsession.”

Fans could text a number and start hearing from Nikki, the film’s obsessive love interest, in character. It started sweet: an enthusiastic hello, some flirty energy. Then over days or weeks, the texts, photos, and voice memos got more intense, more possessive, more “wait, how does she know that about me.” Some fans say Nikki has referenced details specific to their own lives. The campaign spilled out into billboards in LA and New York that follow the same arc, from loving to unhinged. Horror fans are eating it up, sharing screenshots, and comparing notes.

Why This Worked (Besides the Obvious Creep Factor)

It’s a conversation, not a broadcast.

Most brand texts are one-directional: “sale ends tonight,” “your order shipped.” Nikki’s campaign is built like an ongoing relationship. Each message references what came before. It escalates. It has continuity. It’s why people kept opting in even as things got weird.

It’s personal by design.

SMS is a channel where people expect intimacy. Nikki’s campaign leans directly into that instead of pretending it’s not happening, which is exactly why it feels invasive in a way a billboard alone never could. Most brands ignore this. They treat SMS like email with a shorter character count. This campaign treated it like what it is: the most personal channel a brand can access.

It respects the mechanics, even while being playfully unsettling.

Buried in the article, and easy to miss, is the detail that the campaign opens with a genuine opt-in message before Nikki ever introduces herself. Consent is what turns “unsettling and delightful” into “just unsettling and now we’re getting sued.”

The Takeaway for Brands That Aren’t Marketing a Horror Movie

You probably don’t want your SMS program to make customers feel hunted. Fair. But the underlying principles travel to basically any industry:

  • Sequence matters.
    • A single well-timed series of texts that builds on itself beats a pile of disconnected one-offs every time.
  • Reference what you know.
    • Nikki referencing personal details felt creepy in a horror context, but the same instinct (using what a customer already told you or already did) is what makes a loyalty text feel thoughtful instead of generic.
  • Opt-in is the whole game.
    • Every bit of “wow, this is wild” energy this campaign generated depends on people having said yes first. Skip that step and you don’t have a viral marketing moment, you just have a lawsuit.

Where Mobiniti Comes In

We’re not going to pretend every business needs a fictional obsessive love interest texting their customers. But the tools behind a campaign like this (automated sequences, timed follow-ups, personalization based on customer data, clean and compliant opt-in/opt-out flows) are exactly what Mobiniti builds for businesses every day.

If “Obsession” fans are willing to let a fictional character into their phone for weeks at a time because the experience felt worth it, imagine what a real customer will do for a brand that texts them like it actually knows them.

Want to build an SMS sequence with some of that same “wait, how did they know that” energy minus the horror movie plot? Talk to Mobiniti about what a personalized, automated text campaign could look like for your business.
